Johnathan Blanchet, a 45-year-old man with a lengthy criminal record, has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death of 43-year-old Gabie Renaud.

Police announced that Renaud’s body was discovered recently in her ground-floor apartment on Jean-Paul-Riopelle Street in Saint-Jérôme, however, investigators believe she may have been killed weeks earlier, possibly on September 7.

Police were called to Renaud’s apartment on September 26th after her neighbour noticed mail piling up outside her door and said her cat appeared distressed.

Blanchet, who was hospitalized at the time of his scheduled court appearance, appeared via video link Tuesday at the Saint-Jérôme courthouse.

According to Radio-Canada, Blanchet has a history of violence and has been arrested around 30 times. He has at least six convictions related to domestic abuse and has reportedly violated probation conditions on 15 occasions. In 2020, he was sentenced to three years in prison.
