Update: Baker Lake youth charged with Second Degree Murder – Nunavut’s Second Homicide of 2026: Man Charged in Death of George Narkyagik in Baker Lake

Nunavut 2026 Homicide Victim List

Emergency crews were called early in the morning on April 2, 2026, after reports of an unresponsive man. He was taken to the local health centre, where he was later pronounced dead. The victim has been identified as George Narkyagik.

Due to the circumstances surrounding the death, the case has been taken over by the Nunavut RCMP Major Crime Unit, which is now leading the investigation.

Police are asking for the public’s help as they continue to gather information. Investigators are particularly interested in speaking with anyone who may have noticed unusual or suspicious activity near building 2073 between 3:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m. that day.

Updte: On April 6, 2026, Richard Niuqtuq (age 28) of Baker Lake, was arrested and charged with:

  • Second-degree murder of George Narkyagik (age 45), contrary to Section 235 C.C

Niuqtuq was taken before a Justice of the Peace and remanded into custody. His next court appearance is scheduled for April 27, 2026, in Iqaluit, Nunavut. 

Update: On June 3, 2026, the youth was arrested and charged with second-degree murder under Section 235(1) of the Criminal Code.

Following the arrest, the youth appeared before a Justice of the Peace and was remanded into custody. The matter is scheduled to return to court in Iqaluit, Nunavut, on June 23, 2026.
