Fatal Shooting of Sergio Lopes in Vaughan Under Investigation by York Regional Police

A shooting occurred in Vaughan on Monday afternoon near Weston Road and Colossus Drive. Police confirmed that an adult male was shot around 1:08 p.m. on Jan. 26th and was transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.

York Regional Police say the incident is now being investigated as a homicide, with the Homicide Unit taking over the case. Officers also responded to a vehicle fire near Kipling Avenue and Woodbridge Avenue. The vehicle matches the description of the suspect vehicle, a dark-colored SUV.

Authorities are warning residents to expect significant road closures and a strong police presence in the area. Members of the public are urged to avoid the area if possible.

Update: On Tuesday, January 27, 2026, the office of the Chief Coroner identified the homicide victim as Sergio LOPES, 65, of the City of Richmond Hill.

On March 3rd 2026, Toronto police announced that warrants had been issued for 19-year-old Isaiah Thomas Badger (L) and 19-year-old Jacob Wallace (R) for First Degree Murder and Arson.

“We allege that Mr. Badger is responsible for shooting Mr. Lopes and that Mr. Wallace is responsible for operating the vehicle used to flee to scene of the arson,” Nauman noted.

Wallace is described as 5’6”, about 115 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes and he’s from Mississauga. Badger is described as 6’3”, about 117 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes. He is from Edmonton, Alberta where he is also wanted by police there on outstanding weapons charges.

Update: On March 5, 2026, during the ongoing joint investigation, officers from the OPP James Bay Detachment located and arrested Jacob Wallace in the town of Moosonee.
