RCMP were called to a rural home in Ponoka County following a report of a sudden death. When officers arrived, they found a 92-year-old man deceased inside the residence.

Police have not released the identity of the victim.

The death has been confirmed to be a homicide. Investigators are looking for any dash cam video between Feb. 23 at 9 p.m. and Feb 24. at 3 a.m. around Bear Hills Casino and Highway 2A from Highway 611, traveling south into Ponoka. Update: Following an extensive investigation, RCMP announced on October 5th that two Maskwacis residents, aged 48 and 19, have been charged with second-degree murder.

After a judicial interim release hearing, the 19-year-old was remanded into custody and is scheduled to appear in Alberta Court of Justice in Ponoka on Oct. 6, 2026. The 48-year-old was also remanded and is set to appear in the same court on Oct. 16, 2026.
