UPDATE: Dr. Mohammed Shamji pleads guilty to murdering his wife

York Regional Police responded to the area of Howland Drive and Nashville Road, west of Highway 27 on report of a body found in a wooded area on December 1st at around 3:30 pm.

Police located the body of a woman, believed to be of middle eastern descent.  The Homicide Team has taken over the investigation.

Update – December 3

Police identified the victim as Dr. Elana Fric Shamji 40. Dr. Elana Fric Shamji, a mother of three who worked as a family physician at the Scarborough Hospital. Shamji was said to have died as a result of strangulation and blunt force trauma.

Police believe that Shamji was murdered in the family’s North York home before being driven to a wooded area and dumped in York Region.

Police have charged her husband, Dr. Mohammed Shamji 40, a prominent neurosurgeon, with first degree murder.

Toronto police have classified the death of Shamji as the 62nd homicide of 2016. The Toronto homicide Victims list is available here.

Update April 8th 2019
Mohammed Shamji pled guilty to second-degree murder in relation to killing his physician wife, Dr. Elana Fric, in December 2016. Shamji will next appear in the downtown Toronto courthouse on May 8.
