Youth sentenced in the 2017 murder of Margaret Ogina in Kugluktuk

On January 18, 2019 the Nunavut Major Crime Unit laid charges in the April 2017 death of 46-year-old Margaret OGINA. A Kugluktuk youth has been charged with one count of Murder.

Update November 10, 2021:
The accused, who was under 18 years of age at the time of the offence, was sentenced to six months in secure custody, six months of supervision in the community and given 12 months’ probation after she pleaded guilty to manslaughter.

The sentencing led to a community outrage where 130 people signed an online petition demanding the young person be banned from the hamlet of Kugluktuk. The Public Prosecution Service of Canada announced on December 20th, 2021 that they will not appeal the sentence.
