UBC Okanagan security guard Harmandeep Kaur dies following an assault, RCMP are now investigating the incident as a homicide.

Kelowna RCMP responded to an assault call in the University Centre Building on February 26th at approximately 6:00am.

On arrival police located the 24-year-old female security guard suffering from serious injuries. She was rushed to hospital in life-threatening condition, where she died of her injuries.

Investigators located the suspect and arrested him under the Mental Health Act. He remains in hospital and faces possible murder charges.

Lesley Cormack, Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Principal UBC Okanagan said in a statement on the university website “To protect her privacy and that of her family, we are not identifying her at this time.”

Update March 1st
Paramjit Singh Patara, vice-president of the Okanagan Sikh Temple, confirmed the identity of the deceased as Harmandeep Kaur. Patara, a family member of Kaur said she moved to Canada six years ago from India.
