Police responded to a call for an assault just occurred in the Portland Street and King Street West area on August 28, 2023, at approximately 11:25 p.m.
Investigators said a man had been assaulted, and life-saving measures were commenced on scene. The victim was transported to hospital with life-threatening injuries. The victim died of his injuries on Wednesday, August 30, 2023. He has been identified as Brett Sheffield, 38, of Manitoba.
Police announced on September 11th that Craig Gibson, 28, of the United Kingdom, has been arrested and charged with:
- Second Degree Murder
He was scheduled to appear in court at the Toronto Regional Bail Centre, 2201 Finch Avenue West, on Monday, September 11, 2023, at 10 a.m., in room 301.
According to the BBC Gibson is a British Soldier and a spokesperson for the British Army said: “We can confirm a British soldier has been arrested and charged for second-degree murder by the Toronto Police, Canada.”
Update: Craig Gibson who pleaded not guilty, was found guilty of manslaughter on Friday December 20th.
