Thompson RCMP make an arrest in the city’s first homicide of the year

Thompson RCMP responded to a report of a stabbing at an apartment complex, on Princeton Drive, on January 4th at approximately 9:00pm.

Police arrived to find a 30-year-old man from Leaf Rapids suffering from serious injuries. The victim was rushed to hospital where he died of his injuries.

Police arrested Ronald Dysart, 26, of Leaf Rapids on January 5th and charged him with Manslaughter.

Winnipeg Homicide 42 – Douglas Wood’s death deemed a homicide

Winnipeg police and emergency services personnel were dispatched to a residence at 506 Pritchard Avenue on the report of an injured man, on October 31st at approximately 10:30pm.

Douglas Wood, 41, was found inside of the residence in critical condition. He was rushed to hospital where he died of his injuries. Major Crimes Unit and Homicide Unit continued with the investigation.

On December 17th police attended the 500 block of Manitoba Avenue and placed Jenna Sereena Kakegamick, 23, under arrest and charged her with second-degree murder and arson with disregard for human life.

Police believe that Kakegamick and the Wood, who were acquaintances, had been socializing at the residence when a confrontation occurred. Kakegamick, later started a fire and fled, leaving the male unable to escape.

Grand Rapids RCMP investigating a fatal shooting

Grand Rapids RCMP responded to the report of a shooting at a home on December 2nd at approximately 4:00pm.

32-year-old male suffering from serious injuries. He was taken to the nursing station where he succumbed to his injuries.

Police have not released the identity of the deceased, and no suspects have been made at this time. Grand Rapids is approximately 430 kilometres north of Winnipeg.

Dustin Cree Baker identified as Winnipeg’s 41st homicide victim of 2019

Winnipeg police responded to a report of a suspicious circumstance in the 700 block of Dufferin Avenue on November 13th.

Police arrived to find 21-year-old Dustin Cree Backer suffering from what police said appeared to be a gunshot wound. Hw was pronounced at the scene.

No arrests have been made and police ask anyone with information that may assist investigators is asked to call the Homicide Unit at 204-986-6508 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-TIPS (8477).

Jamshaid Wahabi shot to death in Winnipeg

Winnipeg Police responded to a report of a shooting at a nightclub in the 200 block of Bannatyne Avenue on November 2nd at around 1:30am.

Police arrived to find two male victims. One victim was shot in the lower body and was transported to the hospital in stable condition. The second male victim found suffering from gunshot wounds was pronounced deceased at the scene. The deceased has been identified as Jamshaid Wahabi, 23.

Police say there were many people present in the club at the time of the shooting, and are asking that anyone who may have cell phone video taken during the evening or any relevant information to contact the Homicide Unit at (204) 986-6508.

Update April 5th, 2020:
Investigators determined that Rig Debak Moulebou was responsible for the murder of Wahabi, and Moulebou was murdered in retaliation.

3-year-old stabbed in Winnipeg dies of injuries

Winnipeg police and emergency personnel responded to a residence in the 300 block of Pritchard Avenue for a report of a child that had been seriously assaulted on October 30th at approximately 2:35am.

Police arrived to find a three-year-old boy who was stabbed multiple times while he slept. The boy was rushed to hospital where he was taken off life support on November 2nd. The family has identified the boy as Hunter Straight-Smith, 3.

Daniel Jensen, 33, who was in an on-again, off-again relationship with the boy’s mother was arrested on October 31 and remains in custody on charges of attempted murder related to the original investigation. Since the victim has died, those charges could be upgraded. More information will be added as it becomes available.

Update November 11
On November 6, 2019, investigators attended the Winnipeg Remand Centre (WRC) and placed Daniel Jensen under arrest for an upgraded charge of Second Degree Murder.

Winnipeg police investigating the city’s 37th homicide of 2019

Winnipeg Police responded to the 800 block of St. Matthews Avenue on a report of suspicious circumstances on October 31st at 9:50 am.

Police said they located an injured male outside of a residence, who was transported to the hospital in critical condition where he was pronounced deceased. The victim has been identified by WPS as Matthew Sutherland, 28, of Winnipeg.

This investigation is continuing by members of the Homicide Unit. Anyone with information that may assist investigators is asked to call 204-986-6508.

Update November 2nd
Michael Alexander Spence, 32, has been charged with second-degree murder.

31-year-old Cory Scribe, arrested and charged with Manslaughter in Norway House death

Norway House RCMP responded to a report of an unresponsive male found in a wooded area of the community on October 26, at approximately 10:30 a.m.

Police arrived to find a 27-year-old man in serious condition. The victim was rushed to hospital where he was pronounced deceased. Police have not released the cause of death.

On October 28th, police arrested and charged Cory Scribe, 31, with Manslaughter in relation to the death.

No other information has been made available at this time. Norway House RCMP and the major crime unit continue to investigate.

A 13-year-old and a 14-year-old charged with Manslaughter in relation to the death of Neilson Catcheway, 40.

Winnipeg Emergency Services responded to a report of a man lying on the roadway on Main Street between Higgins Avenue and Sutherland Avenue on October 16th at approximately 12:00am.

Police said the victim was suffering from injuries consistent with being run over by a vehicle. The victim who has been identified as Neilson Catcheway, 40, was rushed to hospital where he died of his injuries.

Winnipeg police said a 14-year-old male and a 13-year-old male were arrested and each charged with one count of Manslaughter. The driver of the involved vehicle is asked to come forward and speak with investigators.
