Dustin Cree Baker identified as Winnipeg’s 41st homicide victim of 2019

Winnipeg police responded to a report of a suspicious circumstance in the 700 block of Dufferin Avenue on November 13th.

Police arrived to find 21-year-old Dustin Cree Backer suffering from what police said appeared to be a gunshot wound. Hw was pronounced at the scene.

No arrests have been made and police ask anyone with information that may assist investigators is asked to call the Homicide Unit at 204-986-6508 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-TIPS (8477).

Jamshaid Wahabi shot to death in Winnipeg

Winnipeg Police responded to a report of a shooting at a nightclub in the 200 block of Bannatyne Avenue on November 2nd at around 1:30am.

Police arrived to find two male victims. One victim was shot in the lower body and was transported to the hospital in stable condition. The second male victim found suffering from gunshot wounds was pronounced deceased at the scene. The deceased has been identified as Jamshaid Wahabi, 23.

Police say there were many people present in the club at the time of the shooting, and are asking that anyone who may have cell phone video taken during the evening or any relevant information to contact the Homicide Unit at (204) 986-6508.

3-year-old stabbed in Winnipeg dies of injuries

Winnipeg police and emergency personnel responded to a residence in the 300 block of Pritchard Avenue for a report of a child that had been seriously assaulted on October 30th at approximately 2:35am.

Police arrived to find a three-year-old boy who was stabbed multiple times while he slept. The boy was rushed to hospital where he was taken off life support on November 2nd. The family has identified the boy as Hunter Straight-Smith, 3.

Daniel Jensen, 33, who was in an on-again, off-again relationship with the boy’s mother was arrested on October 31 and remains in custody on charges of attempted murder related to the original investigation. Since the victim has died, those charges could be upgraded. More information will be added as it becomes available.

Update November 11
On November 6, 2019, investigators attended the Winnipeg Remand Centre (WRC) and placed Daniel Jensen under arrest for an upgraded charge of Second Degree Murder.

Winnipeg police investigating the city’s 37th homicide of 2019

Winnipeg Police responded to the 800 block of St. Matthews Avenue on a report of suspicious circumstances on October 31st at 9:50 am.

Police said they located an injured male outside of a residence, who was transported to the hospital in critical condition where he was pronounced deceased. The victim has been identified by WPS as Matthew Sutherland, 28, of Winnipeg.

This investigation is continuing by members of the Homicide Unit. Anyone with information that may assist investigators is asked to call 204-986-6508.

Update November 2nd
Michael Alexander Spence, 32, has been charged with second-degree murder.

31-year-old Cory Scribe, arrested and charged with Manslaughter in Norway House death

Norway House RCMP responded to a report of an unresponsive male found in a wooded area of the community on October 26, at approximately 10:30 a.m.

Police arrived to find a 27-year-old man in serious condition. The victim was rushed to hospital where he was pronounced deceased. Police have not released the cause of death.

On October 28th, police arrested and charged Cory Scribe, 31, with Manslaughter in relation to the death.

No other information has been made available at this time. Norway House RCMP and the major crime unit continue to investigate.

A 13-year-old and a 14-year-old charged with Manslaughter in relation to the death of Neilson Catcheway, 40.

Winnipeg Emergency Services responded to a report of a man lying on the roadway on Main Street between Higgins Avenue and Sutherland Avenue on October 16th at approximately 12:00am.

Police said the victim was suffering from injuries consistent with being run over by a vehicle. The victim who has been identified as Neilson Catcheway, 40, was rushed to hospital where he died of his injuries.

Winnipeg police said a 14-year-old male and a 13-year-old male were arrested and each charged with one count of Manslaughter. The driver of the involved vehicle is asked to come forward and speak with investigators.

15-year-old boy dies in Brandon Manitoba stabbing

Police responded to a report of an unresponsive teen at 534 Louise Ave. in Brandon MB on August 29th at approximately 7:00pm.

Police arrived and administered CPR until paramedics arrived. The boy was rushed to hospital where he died of his injuries. 

A 15-year-old boy has been arrested in connection to the incident.

Two Sisters charged – John Graham Buesnel, identified as Winnipeg’s latest homicide victim

Winnipeg emergency crews responded to a report of an unresponsive man inside an apartment suite in the 400 block of Elgin Avenue on August 24th at approximately 1:40am. Upon arrival, police found the victim, John Graham Buesnel, 64, deceased. 

On August 29, Taylor Lapierre, a 24-year-old female of Winnipeg, was arrested and charged with Manslaughter and Fail to Comply with Condition Recognizance. On August 31, Shyla Lee Walker, a 31-year-old female of Winnipeg, turned herself in at the Winnipeg Police Service and was arrested and charged with Manslaughter.

Police said Lapierre and Walker who are sisters were acquaintances of Buesnel.

Alexander Agnus McPherson charged with Manslaughter in Winnipeg’s most recent homicide

Emergency crews responded to a report of an unresponsive man, who had been the victim of an assault in the area of Tylehurst Street and Wolseley Avenue West on August 16th at approximately 5:20pm.

The victim was rushed to hospital in critical condition where he died of his injuries. Police have not released the identity of the victim at this time. 

Alexander Agnus McPherson was arrested on August 16th and originally charged with aggravated assault. The charges have since been upgraded to manslaughter.

Leona Blacksmith charged with murder in fatal Cross Lake house fire

Cross Lake RCMP witnessed smoke coming from a residence in the community on August 9th at approximately 3:30am. Police were unable to gain entry through the front door due to heavy smoke, however, officers broke multiple windows to help clear the smoke.

As the smoke cleared police found a 93-year-old woman on the floor of the home. The victim was rushed to hospital where she died of her injuries. 

On August 11th 38-year-old Leona Blacksmith, from Cross Lake, was arrested and charged with Second Degree Murder. Police have not released the relationship between the victim and the accused.
