The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) in Essex County have upgraded their investigation into the death of 83-year-old Anita Goodings, a Leamington resident, from a “sudden death” to a homicide. Emergency crews found her body at an apartment complex on Sherk Street after responding to a welfare check on Wednesday afternoon. A post-mortem determined that foul play was the cause of her death.
Police have released a limited description of a person of interest: a white male with a muscular build. They believe the death is an isolated incident and reassured the public that there is no ongoing safety threat.
A heightened police presence is expected in the area as the investigation continues. The OPP’s Forensic Identification Services and other units are assisting in the case. Authorities are asking anyone with information or surveillance footage to come forward.
Update: An arrest warrant has been issued for Kevin Goodings, 61, of no fixed address.
