Morgan Churchill charged in connection with the 2022 Edmonton Homicide of Joseph Mercier

On December 28, 2022, police were called to a possible drug overdose near 79 Street and 118 Avenue. When they arrived, they found 60-year-old Joseph Mercier. At the time, investigators did not consider his death suspicious.

A few months later, in March 2023, the Edmonton Medical Examiner completed a toxicology report, confirming that Mercier died from fentanyl toxicity. His death was initially ruled accidental. However, after a witness came forward with new information, the Edmonton Police Service’s Homicide Section reopened the case.

Detective Sylvie Boy from the Homicide Section emphasized the importance of witnesses coming forward, saying it can be key in helping families find answers and closure.

On March 26, 2025, police arrested 40-year-old Morgan Churchill, who was known to the victim. She has been charged with second-degree murder.
