Montreal police were called to the report of a fight in the parking lot of the Orange Julep restaurant on May 31st.

On arrival police located a man in his 50’s who had been knocked to the ground and repeatedly struck. He was taken to hospital where he died of his injuries.

A 22-year-old man the next day with one count of aggravated assault. Véronique Dubuc of the Montreal police said “Given the changes in circumstances, it will now be up to (prosecutors) to evaluate whether the charges will be modified.”

According to reports, A 26-year-old man from Montreal has been handed an eight-year prison sentence for his involvement in the deadly assault of 50-year-old Andrei Petuhov outside the Orange Julep restaurant in 2023.

Nedjem Eddine Khirat was found guilty of manslaughter after the court determined he kicked Petuhov while he was lying unresponsive on the ground. The judge dismissed Khirat’s argument that he acted in self-defence, finding that surveillance footage showed the attack was a deliberate act of violence. After receiving credit for time spent in custody before trial, Khirat will serve just under eight years in prison.

Petuhov, a husband and father of two, died in hospital two days after the attack. As part of his sentence, Khirat has also been ordered to provide a DNA sample and is prohibited from owning or possessing weapons.

Khirat is the final person to be sentenced in connection with the fatal beating. Two other men previously admitted their involvement and have already received their sentences.
