Update Victim identified as 79-year-old Eric Kutzner: Man arrested in relation to the homicide of a man in Nanaimo

Nanaimo RCMp responded to a wellness check at inside the Buzz Coffee House at the corner of Highway 19A and Rutherford Road on February 12th at approximately 9:00am.

Police arrived to find an adult male deceased inside a commercial business at Long Lake Plaza. Another man was also located at the business, he was arrested and was taken into RCMP custody.

 Reserve Const. Gary O’Brien with Nanaimo RCMP said “Investigators are confident that based on the evidence collected to date, there was no connection between the deceased and the individual arrested at the scene, and that this was a random incident with a tragic outcome.”

The victim’s identity and cause of death have not been released at this time, however, it is being investigates as a homicide.

Update February 17th
The victim has been identified as 79-year-old Eric Kutzner.  RCMP said 29-year-old Jason Turok has been arrested and charged with second degree murder.

In 2016, when he was living in Creston, Kutzner received the Governor General’s Caring Canadian Award for restoring a property that housed and employed people with developmental and physical disabilities. 

Police have said there is no evidence to suggest the two men knew each other.
