On January 8, 2025, Mounties responded to a distress call at a home on Saddle Lake Cree Nation, where they found 61-year-old Garvin Lloyd Chisan seriously injured from a stabbing.

Paramedics quickly transported Chisan by air ambulance to a hospital in Edmonton, but unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries later that day.

Following an investigation into Chisan’s tragic death, authorities arrested Jeremy Shaun Cardinal, a 44-year-old resident of Saddle Lake Cree Nation, on January 10, 2025. Cardinal has been charged with first-degree murder in connection to the fatal stabbing of Chisan.
