Vancouver police were called to the report of gunshots at the University Golf Club at approximately 10 a.m on October 17th.

On arrival police located a 38-year-old male victim deceased. His identity is being withheld pending next of kin notification.

A burning vehicle was located nearby in an alley at West 20th Avenue and Crown Street Police said it is still unclear if it or a burning vehicle is connected to the shooting.

Update: Police have identified the victim as 38-year old Vishal Walia. Investigators believe this to have been a targeted shooting in relation to the lower mainland gang conflict.

IHIT is urging anyone who had contact with Mr. Walia in the days leading to his death, to please contact police, as we continue to build a timeline of events, says Sergeant Timothy Pierotti of IHIT. We are still appealing to anyone with dash cam video to secure the footage and to contact us immediately.

Update: 18-year-old Deandre Baptiste, 22-year-old Balraj Basra and 21-year-old Iqbal Kang have been charged with first-degree murder, IHIT said.

Any witnesses or anyone with dash camera video who attended the area of the University Golf Course between 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. or who was in the 4000-block of W 20th Avenue or who has any information regarding the shooting, to contact the IHIT Information Line at 1-877-551-IHIT (4448) or by email at ihitinfo@rcmp-grc.gc.ca.
