On the night of August 17, at approximately 11:10 p.m., Athabasca RCMP responded to reports of a violent home invasion in Calling Lake, Alberta.
According to police, a group of masked and armed individuals forced their way into a residence. During the break-in, 40-year-old Edward Young was shot and later pronounced dead.
The RCMP Major Crimes Unit launched an investigation, which led to the arrest of 35-year-old Terris Cardinal, a Calling Lake resident. He was taken into custody on the evening of Friday, August 23, at a home within the community.
Cardinal is now facing several serious charges, including second-degree murder, break and enter, and multiple firearms-related offences. Authorities also revealed that Cardinal was already the subject of a Canada-wide warrant at the time of his arrest.
He has been remanded into custody and is scheduled to appear in Athabasca Provincial Court on September 2.
