Hamilton police announced on May 27th at approximately 6:12pm that they are conducting an investigation in the area of Jones and Barton. Police responded to the report of a shooting at 322 Jones st in Stoney Creek.
On arrival police located a 27-year-old female and 28-year-old male both tenants at the residence deceased. The victim’s identities will not be released at this time by police. Investigators said the woman was an Educational Assistant, and the man was an Electrician.
Police said the incident is a double homicide, and said “This is an active situation as police deal with a barricaded person believed to be involved with the incident.”
The 57-year-old landlord had barricaded himself in the residence with firearms. Hamilton Police Emergency Response Unit contained the area, while negotiators engaged in contact with the male in an attempt to peacefully resolve the incident.
Police said the suspect fired at the Hamilton Police armored vehicle. The suspect later fired additional rounds, which resulted in an interaction with police, where he was struck and ultimately died.
The Special Investigations Unit has been contacted and has invoked its mandate. There is no longer a threat to public safety.
Update May 30th
CBC had identified the victims as Carissa MacDonald, 27, and Aaron Stone, 28. Terry Gerald Brekka is listed as the owner of the home according to property records.
Update
SIU released their report on September 25th detailing the case and collected evidence. A total of 50 exhibits were collected for examination, including:
- Scorpion Model: EVO 3S1 (x2);
- DPMS Panther Arms Model: LR-308; and
- Heckler and Koch Model: HK 416 Calibre: 5.56mm x 45 – the SO.
As a result, as there are no reasonable grounds to conclude that the SO’s comported himself other than within the limits of the criminal law when he shot the Complainant, there is no basis for proceeding with charges in this case. The file is closed.
