Winnipeg police responded to a stabbing in the area of Talbot Avenue and Watt Street on December 20, 2023, at approximately 8:00 a.m.

On arrival police located 46-year-old Ivan RUBANIK, suffering from serious injuries. He was transported to hospital in unstable condition, where he died of his injuries.

Ethan Richard GLADU, 19, of Winnipeg,  was arrested on December 21 at approximately 10:50 a.m. in the 100 block of Henry Street.  Gladu has been charged with Second Degree Murder and detained in custody. Police said the investigation has indicated that GLADU, without provocation, fatally stabbed RUBANIK while he was walking to work. GLADU fled the area, resulting in numerous police resources responding to the intersection. 

*Ivan, his wife Yuliia and their children had been in Winnipeg for less than a year, after fleeing the war in Ukraine. A gofundme campaign has been created to help his family and help cover the funeral costs.
