Const. David Wynn, Mountie gunned down in St. Albert, dies in hospital.

A routine licence plate check on a slow night led up to the shooting that killed Const. David Wynn in a casino near Edmonton on Jan 17th, 2015.

Deputy Commissioner Marianne Ryan said Wynn was in the casino parking lot checking licence plates — a common task for RCMP members on a slow night. Wynn got suspicious when one of the plates he checked did not match the truck that it was attached to. He decided to follow up by going inside the casino to check the building’s security footage.

After identifying a suspect on the video, the pair of RCMP officers happened to pass the man on the way out of the casino.

When the officers tried to arrest the man, he pulled a handgun and fired two shots. Wynn was hit in the head, while Bond was shot in the arm and torso. RCMP say the encounter lasted three to five seconds.

St. Albert RCMP has identified the man responsible for shooting two Mounties inside a casino early Saturday morning.

RCMP Commissioner Bob Paulson said 34-year-old Shawn Maxwell Rehn had a lengthy, “incredibly complex criminal history” and was “very, very well known to police.”

Rehn was found dead inside a rural St. Albert-area home after an intense manhunt.
