Montreal police responded to an apartment building in Montreal’s Rosemont-La Petite-Patrie borough, on March 17th at approximately 9:00am.

On arrival, police located Mylène Gingras, 75, Francine Gingras-Boucher 53, and Richard Galarneau, 53, deceased at the scene. Police said the victims were stabbed to death.

The accused Arthur Galarneau, was arrested outside the apartment, covered in blood. Galarneau has been charged with second-degree murder.

Update January 22, 2025
According to CTV News, a Quebec Superior Court judge accepted a joint request from prosecutors and defence lawyers stating that Arthur Galarneau is not criminally responsible for a triple murder because of mental illness.

A psychiatrist later testified that he was suffering from schizophrenia during the killings and was experiencing severe psychotic symptoms that left him unable to tell right from wrong. Prosecutors are now seeking to have him designated a high-risk offender, a status that would restrict any future release from psychiatric care. Arguments on that issue are scheduled for Feb. 23.
