Arrests made in the fatal Hagersville shooting of Const. Grzegorz Pierzchala

OPP said that Const. Grzegorz Pierzchala responded to a vehicle in a ditch at around 2:40 p.m. on Tuesday December 27th in the Indian Line and Concession 14 Walpole.

When Pierzchala approached the vehicle he was met with gunfire from the driver. The officer was rushed to hospital where he died of his injuries. According to OPP Commissioner Thomas Carrique, Pierzchala was murdered on the same day he learned he had passed his 10-month probation period. He was on his first solo patrol.

The suspects, a man and a woman fled the scene. At 5:43 p.m. OPP sent out an emergency alert asking residents in the area to shelter in place as police searched for the suspects who were believed to be armed. Photos of 25-year-old Randall McKenzie and a woman were included in the alert, however, she was not named.

The female suspect was arrested shortly after on Ojibway Road. According to Norfolk today McKenzie has also been arrested. His arrest was confirmed through the police scanner. The shelter-in-place warnings have been lifted.

Update December 28th
Randall McKenzie, 25, and the woman who has been identified as Brandi Stewart-Sperry, 30, were both formally charged on December 28th with first-degree murder.

The homicide of Const. Grzegorz Pierzchala is the 4th Ontario fatal police shooting this year and 5th Canadian officer killed while on duty.
