20-year-old man charged with the murder of Kira Opoonechaw and Phoenix Checkosis in Saskatoon

Saskatoon  police responded to a report of an injured person at a residence in the 400 block of Ave. B N on January 19th at 1:40pm.

On arrival police located a 20-year-old Phoenix Checkosis and a 19-year-old Kira Opoonechaw, suffering from stab wounds. They were both rushed to hospital where Kira died of her injuries.

A 20 year old Saskatoon man was arrested near the scene, and he has been charged with second-degree-murder and attempted murder.

The victims and the suspect were known to each other. At the request of the family the name of the victim is not being released at this time.

Update: Phoenix Checkosis, 21 of Saskatoon died in hospital on January 20th. The charges have been upgraded to two counts of second-degree murder.
