New information released by VPD – 2 killed in 2018 Vancouver shooting

Vancouver Police responded to a report of several shots fired in the area of East Broadway and Ontario Street on January 13th at approximately 9:15pm.

Kevin Whiteside, 23, died in hospital. Police believe that Whiteside exchanged gun fire with at least one other person during the incident.

15-year-old Alfred Wong,  from Coquitlam, who was in a vehicle driving by at the time of the shooting was injured, and died of his injuries in Hospital.

No arrests have been made at this time.

Update January 13th, 2019

Vancouver police believe that Kevin Whiteside was in the area to allegedly murder 28-year-old Vancouver resident, Matthew Navas-Rivas, who was at a restaurant with a female companion. As the two left the restaurant, a second person opened fire. Navas-Rivas was murdered in an unrelated incident, on July 15, 2018.

Update March 9th 2022
Chief Palmer announced charges against Kane Carter for the January 2018 deaths of Wong and 23-year-old Kevin Whiteside on March 9th 2022. Carter has been charged with two counts of second degree murder, and one count of aggravated assault for the shooting of a third person, who was not seriously injured. He is also charged with discharging a firearm with the intent to injure Whiteside.

According to a press release from Vancouver police ,”Investigators have long believed that Whiteside, who was involved in gang life, had come to the area that night to shoot a rival who was having dinner at a restaurant near Broadway and Ontario Street, in Mount Pleasant. Gunfire was exchanged on the street as the Wong family passed by the restaurant in their car. A stray bullet entered the vehicle and struck Alfred.”
