Update: Youth’s charge upgraded to First-Degree Murder in connection to the 2023 death of a 65-year-old woman in Mount Pearl Newfoundland

 RNC Operational Patrol Services, Criminal Investigation Division and Forensic Identification Services responded to a residence on Smallwood Drive in Mount Pearl in relation to a report of a sudden death on August 3rd at approximately 4:15 p.m.

 Police arrived to find a 65-year-old female was deceased inside the home.  Police have not released the identity of the deceased or cause of death, however, Office of the Chief Medical Examiner deemed the death a homicide.

On August 8, 2023, investigators arrested a 14-year-old male at a home in Mount Pearl and charged him with second-degree murder. Police have not released if the victim was known to the accused.

Investigators are specifically seeking a blue plastic recycling bag that was believed to be discarded in the Smallwood Drive or surrounding area of Mount Pearl, encompassing Park Avenue, on Thursday, August 3. The RNC is asking area residents to check their properties, including garbage bins, and contact police if you should locate any suspicious items. Investigators continue to seek video footage, from CCTV, dash-cameras, or doorbell cameras, in the noted area as well. Update: On August 15, 2024 the RNC announced that a male who was 14 at the time, was initially charged with second-degree murder, however, given additional investigation, the charge has now been upgraded to first-degree murder.
