Death of David Hugh Sweeney, of Thunder Bay, being investigated as a homicide

Thunder Bay police responded to a report of an assault at a home located in the 100 block of North Algoma street, on August 31st at approximately 7:00pm.

Police arived at the home to find 59-year-old David Hugh Sweeney deceased. Det. Insp. Ryan Hughes said there was trauma to the body but would not provide any further details. No other information is available at this time.

Amelia Corrie Sainnawap’s death ruled a homicide.

The body of Amelia Corrie Sainnawap, 31, was found in an empty lot on Cumming Street on Wednesday August 22nd.

The Thunder Bay Police Service is investigating the death of Sainnawap as a homicide. No arrests have been made.

63 year old man murdered in Thunder Bay

Thunder Bay police were called to a home on McLaughlin Street, at  around 5:40 a.m. on February 26th. Police arrived to find a 63 year old man dead and a 25 year old woman injured.

The woman was sent to hospital for treatment and was released. Police issued a Canada Wide Warrant for the arrest of Charles Casmey in relation to the homicide. On March 1st,  Charles Casmey was taken into custody when he surrendered to police at approximately 9:25 p.m. Casmey has been charged with Second Degree Murder,Assault Causing Bodily Harm and Fail to Comply with Recognizance.

Nicholas Wendal Baxter, Thunder Bay’s first homicide victim of 2018

Thunder Bay police attended a motel in the 400 block of Cumberland Street North on February 5th at approximately 2:30 pm.

At the scene police located the victim, Nicholas Wendal Baxter, 28, suffering from apparent injuries. Baxter was rushed to hospital where he died of his injuries. Police have not released the cause of death.

Christopher Achneepineskum, 45, of Thunder Bay has been charged with 1st degree murder, and Rachel Mary Moonias 36 years of Thunder Bay is charged with Accessory After Fact to Murder.

The July death of Barbara Kentner, now deemed a homicide

Brayden Bushby was charged with aggravated assault in February 2017 after thowing a trailer hitch at Barbara Kentner, 34, on January 29th.

Kentner required surgery after being hit in the torso by the trailer hitch. Barbara Kenter died in hospital a little over five months after the incident, on July 4.

Brayden Bushby 19, has now been charged with second degree murder. Bushby made his first court appearance on November 3rd.

Bert Isaac Wood, has been identified as Thunder Bay’s latest Homicide victim

Thunder Bay police received a call to check on the welfare of a man on September 10th at approximately 11:26am at a home in the area of Syndicate Avenue North.

Police arrived to find one man dead and two other people who had been  assaulted.

The deceased has been identified as Bert Isaac Wood, 24. Police said the cause of death will not be released as the matter is now before the courts.

Update September 15th – Accused identity released.
Nazareth Alexander Nelson, 35, was arrested the evening of September 10 and charged with second-degree murder, aggravated assault and attempted murder.

Death of Brayden Moonias of Thunder Bay has been determined to be a homicide

Thunder Bay police and emergency crews were called to the area of Marina Park at McVicar Creek on August 6th at approximately 8:40am.

Brayden Moonias 18, of Thunder Bay was found dead at the scene. An autopsy completed on August  9th determined to be a homicide.

Police are not releasing the details of the autopsy.

Three charged with second degree murder in the death of Kevin Roundhead

Thunder Bay police responded to a 911 call for assistance on July 5th at around 4pm in the area of Cumberland Street at McVicar Creek.

Police located the injured man, who was identified as Kevin Roundhead 31. Roundhead was rushed to hospital where he died of his injuries. The cause of death has not been released.

Skylar Masakayash, 22, has been arrested and charged with second degree murder and breach of probation.

Police made two additional arrests on July 7th. Emma Massakayash 43, and 23 year old Jessie Chapais have both been charged with second degree murder in relation to the death of Kevin Roundhead.

The Death of Kevin Roundhead is the third Thunder Bay Homicide in July.

charges laid in double homicide of two First Nations people

Update: Charges laid in double homicide of two First Nations people

Thunder Bay police were called to a home at 248 Carl Avenue on July 2nd where they found the bodies of two people. Evidence at the scene lead investigators to believe the suspicious death was a homicide.

Robert Lloyd Gray, age 50 of Thunder Bay Ontario , formally from Mishkeegogammang Ontario and Kory Lee Campbell , age 22 of Thunder Bay Ontario and Cat Lake Ontario. The cause of death has not been released at this time.

Garnet Loon, 41,  and Kailee Loon 19 both of Thunder Bay were arrested in Sioux Lookout, and both charged with second degree murder.

Update November 6th, 2017
Garnet Loon has now been charged with First Degree Murder in relation to the death of Kory Lee Campbell. Kailee Loon hast been charged with Assault in relation to the death of Campbell.

Kailee Loon & Garnet Loon are also both charged with Second Degree Murder in relation to the death of Robert Grey.
