On Tuesday, February 10th the Edmonton Medical Examiner’s Office conducted an autopsy on the 24-year-old female found deceased in a downtown apartment on Monday evening. As a result of the autopsy, the Edmonton Police Service has confirmed the death to be the city’s second occurrence of homicide in 2015.
The deceased has been identified as Lena Steinhauer, 24 years of age.
Police continue to encourage anyone who has recently attended the apartment complex, or may have seen something suspicious in the area, to contact the Edmonton Police Service at 780-423-4567 or #377 from a mobile phone.
Homicide Section detectives arrested Ryan Matchee on Thursday, Sept. 17, 2015, in Edmonton. Matchee is facing second degree murder charges.
Mustafa Mattan moved from Ottawa to Fort McMurray less than a month ago was shot dead in his Alberta apartment on Monday Feb 9th, his family told CBC News.
Mustafa Mattan, 28, was answering a knock at his apartment door on Monday night when someone shot through it.
“My brother, he was shot through the door before he even touched the door knob, before he even opened the door,” said his brother, Ahmed Mattan, who also lives in the Fort McMurray apartment, along with several other roommates.
“So the killer, whoever he or she might be, they didn’t even know who they were killing apart from the fact we were living in that apartment.”
Ahmed Mattan said his brother never committed a crime and never hurt anybody.
The man has been identified as 36-year-old Paul Murray Grandbois. The cause of death is not being released at this time because the investigation is still taking place.
Police were called to assist EMS in the Blue Quill Estates neighbourhood around 6:40 a.m. Wednesday Jan 21, where the body was found laying beside the curb on 25 Avenue, between 119 Street and 120 Street in Edmonton.
Police said they did not have any suspects.
Grandbois’ criminal record includes a July 2008 conviction of failing to comply with conditions, an April 2009 conviction for failing to appear, and a May 2009 conviction for breaching conditions. In December 2009 he was sentenced to 32 months in jail for sexual assault and in April 2013 Grandbois was sentenced to 30 days in jail for assault.
A routine licence plate check on a slow night led up to the shooting that killed Const. David Wynn in a casino near Edmonton on Jan 17th, 2015.
Deputy Commissioner Marianne Ryan said Wynn was in the casino parking lot checking licence plates — a common task for RCMP members on a slow night. Wynn got suspicious when one of the plates he checked did not match the truck that it was attached to. He decided to follow up by going inside the casino to check the building’s security footage.
After identifying a suspect on the video, the pair of RCMP officers happened to pass the man on the way out of the casino.
When the officers tried to arrest the man, he pulled a handgun and fired two shots. Wynn was hit in the head, while Bond was shot in the arm and torso. RCMP say the encounter lasted three to five seconds.
St. Albert RCMP has identified the man responsible for shooting two Mounties inside a casino early Saturday morning.
RCMP Commissioner Bob Paulson said 34-year-old Shawn Maxwell Rehn had a lengthy, “incredibly complex criminal history” and was “very, very well known to police.”
Rehn was found dead inside a rural St. Albert-area home after an intense manhunt.
The body of the 25 year old man was found inside the Fort McMurray home on Jan 9th. The two other men that lived in the house were away at the time of the fire.
Investigators have ruled the death of the man a homicide.
Two seniors are dead in what police believe is a murder-suicide in the Hamlet of Entwistle.
At around 1:30 p.m. on Jan 7th, Evansburg RCMP were asked to check on a woman’s elderly parents at their Entwistle home. Inside the residence, officers found the couple, both aged 73, deceased. The pair died of apparent gunshot wounds.
There was no sign of forced entry and the residence was secured from the inside, this lead police to believe this incident was a murder suicide.
The name of the couple is not being released at the family’s request.
Officers discovered Brenda Walker’s body at a residence in the 100 block of Sixth Avenue around 1 a.m Jan. 6th just minutes after she called 911 for help.
Walker’s ex-boyfriend, Glenn Randall, 52, of Strathmore, was arrested and charged without incident on Tuesday.
23 year old Murat Osman Omar a man of Somali descent who had been living in Calgary was murdered in an alley in the city’s northwest on January 2nd 2015.
Police were called to a report on gunshots. Upon arrival Omar’s body was found, however his cause of death has not been determined.
There have been no suspects as of yet. Detectives have identified a vehicle of interest and are seeking public assistance to locate and identify it. The vehicle is believed to be a 2000 to 2003, silver, Acura MDX.

Abdullahi Ahmed 27, who was of Somalian heritage, moved to Calgary from Toronto a little more than five years ago. He has become the city’s first homicide victim of 2015. The shooting attack took place at 5am January 1st, 2015 on a quiet residential street in Calgary. Seven people sustained gunshot wounds, however only Mr. Ahmed was fatal.
There have been no suspects named at this time.
