Family of Calgary man Anthony Heffernan demand answers.

Heffernan was shot by a Calgary officer with 15 years policing experience the afternoon of March 16 at the Super 8 in the 3000 block of Barlow Tr. N.E.

Police at the time said they were called by hotel staff and tried to make contact through the space in a latched door before making the decision to enter the room, then inside were confronted with a “high-risk situation.”

Heffernan’s sister Natalie Iaquinta offered details of what she said the family has been told thus far by investigators.

Iaquinta said the ordeal started when her brother failed to check out in the midst of his relapse into drug addiction.

She said five officers broke down the door and Heffernan stood and raised his hands — in one was a lighter and in the other was a syringe.
