Toronto’s first homicide of 2018 – Barbara Kovic, 78, found dead. Husband charged with second-degree murder

Toronto police responded to a medical call in the Martin Grove Road and The Westway area on January 3rd at approximately 9:35pm.

Barbara Kovic, 78,  was found in the home suffering from obvious signs of trauma. She was pronounced deceased at the scene. The cause of death has not been released at this time.

Ante Kovic, 81, the victim’s husband was arrested and charged with second degree murder.

24 year old charged with Manslaughter in connection to his father’s death in Markham

Markham Police were called to a home in the area of Bayview Avenue and Highway 407 on January 1st on report of an injured person.

Police located a 49 year old man unconscious and not breathing. Despite lifesaving efforts the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police arrested and charged the victim’s 24 year old son and charged him with manslaughter. York Regional Police said they will not be releasing the names of the victim or the accused.

Edmonton’s first homicide of 2018 – Ruben Baker dies of unreleased cause

Edmonton police responded to the report of a deceased male found in the area of 92 Avenue and 77 Street on January 1st at 1:20pm.

An autopsy was preformed on January 3rd, and determined the death of Ruben Baker 21 was a homicide. Police have not released the cause of death at this time  to protect the integrity of the ongoing investigation.

Jeffrey Ronald Maxner shot to death in Brantford

Brantford Police responded to the Brantford General Hospital on report of an adult male who had suffered life threatening gunshot injuries on January 1, at approximately 5:35pm..

The victim, Jeffrey Ronald Maxner, 34, died of a gunshot wound in hospital. Police believe the shooting that happened in the area of St Paul Ave and Terrace Hill Street was targeted.

Update – Avtar Dhammi charged with first degree murder after pedestrian stuck and killed

Peel Regional Police responded to report of a pedestrian struck at a plaza on Torbram Road and Peter Robertson Boulevard in Brampton, on December 31st at approximately 1:45am.

A 34 year old man from Caledon, was struck by a pickup truck that was still at the scene. The victim was rushed to hospital where he died of his injuries.

Police arrested Avtar Dhammi, 38, on December 31st and charged him with first degree murder.

Update January 3rd
The victim has been identified as Gurpreet Dhami, 34. Avtar Dhammi and Gurpreet Dhami are “extended family” according to Peel police.

Woman found dead in Oshawa basement apartment

Oshawa police were called to a basement apartment on McMillan Drive in Oshawa after a female victim was discovered inside on December 29th at approximately 7:30pm.

Police said the death is suspicious and arrested the suspect, Adam Strong, 45, of McMillan drive. Strong has been charged with Improper/Indecent Interference with a Dead Body.

An autopsy has been scheduled to confirm the identity of the victim and determine the cause of death.

Update January 6th
The victim has been identified as Rori Hache , 18, of Oshawa. Police said the body parts found in Oshawa Harbor back in September also belonged to Rori Hache.
